Making Use of Autumn Leaves

Autumn leaves may seem annoying, but, when made thoughtful use of in your garden, are actually your friend. Use leaves as a mulch. Microbial activity in the leaves keeps the ground insulated and warm. This keeps roots and bulbs protected from hard frosts. Rather than raking them up and tossing them, let them lie. Leaves replenish the fertility of the soil. Fall is a recycling period for soil nutrients. Your soil quality and your plant health will thank you. A thick layer of leaves leaves remains well into next spring. This keeps weeds suppressed and  protects existing plants from competition. Cheaper and Greener: You don't have to purchase and transport manufactured mulch from elsewhere. You have it in your garden already. If you don't have any deciduous trees nearby, ask a neighbor who does for a truckload.
